How to inspect slabs on arrival

The first 30 minutes after a crate opens decide whether a problem is a quick claim or a long argument. Check in the right order, photograph everything, and write it down before the crates are broken up.

Most arrival disputes are not about whether damage happened — they are about whether anyone can prove when it happened. A short, consistent routine protects both sides: the buyer gets a fast resolution, and the seller can act on evidence instead of memories.

  1. Check the crate before you open it

Photograph the crate as delivered: seals, strapping, corner damage, water marks, any sign it was dropped or tipped. If the outside is damaged, note it on the delivery paperwork before signing — a clean signature with no remark is hard to revisit later.

  2. Count first, then look

Confirm the piece count and codes against the packing list while the slabs are still in the crate. A short shipment found on day one is a different conversation from one found after half the job is installed.

  3. Inspect face by face, in good light

Pull each slab and look at the face under daylight or strong site light: chips on edges and corners, scratches, shade variation between pieces, and any crack. Check edges by touch as well as sight — a hairline crack hides in a photo but not under a fingertip.

  4. Sort before you install

Set aside anything questionable and label it. Never install a slab you already doubt: once it is cut or fixed, it is yours. Install the cleanest pieces first and keep the questionable ones visible for the claim photos.

  5. Photograph like evidence, not like a brochure

For every issue: one wide shot showing which slab and where it sits, one close shot of the defect, and one shot of the code or label on that slab. Add a short written note — date, crate number, defect — and send it promptly, within the inspection window stated in your quotation.
